If we turn back the pages of history, we’ll see that everything has changed; evolved to be real exact. What used to be a big and surprising thing in the past isn’t much of a deal today. One of the biggest contributors in this revolution, computer technology has itself undergone a big change.
Anyways, I’d like to dedicate this article to our old friend Floppy which was a part of this revolution, which has helped a lot in the past when there were no optical mediums like CDs and DVDs, which was the only means of transferring data from one computer to another for a long time. It has really been a good friend but it needed to be replaced, by something stronger and much useful recordable devices and it was too by CDs and DVDs. A single CD can hold approx. 650 MB data and a single DVD up to GBs which is hundreds and thousands or times greater than what a Floppy can carry. Additionally, CDs/DVDs can store music and video files that can be playable in other devices. And even when we consider the price, CDs and DVDs still come to be victorious. A pack of 100 blank CD-R cost around $58 (0.58 each) and a 20 blank DVD pack cost around $42 ($2.10 each) which is very much cheaper in compare to 1.44 MB storing capacity having Floppies which are nowadays in the midst of extinction and are very hard to be found in shops (approx $44 for 100 floppy disks pack, $0.44 each).
I really hope someone comes up with some new technology and I can again put floppy disks inside my floppy drive’s mouth instead of just using it as a coaster to put drinks on. Ya you heard it right. I’ve been using my floppies as a coaster but even for that spot damaged CDs and DVDs are replacing it. What a tragedy???
