blue-ray-vs-hd-dvd.pngIt’s been an interesting battle of DVD format between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. The result was out and as expected Blu-Ray has knocked out HD-DVD out of the competition. Blu-ray is king now and the next-generation optical disc format.

Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is an optical disc storage media format. Its main uses are high-definition video and data storage. The disc has the same dimensions as a standard DVD or CD.” - Wiki

First of all, congrats to Blu-Ray for its achievement. And now moving on to what I was really about to say. As the winner has been declared, I think it’s time to buy blu ray players probably. I mean why still stick to DVDs and HD-DVDs when it’s been made clear that Blu-Ray is far superior and the future of format. There is absolutely no comparison between Blu-Ray and DVDs in anyway. Even its foremost competitor HD-DVDs has lost to its huge storage capacity, speed and more support from movie studios.

HD-DVD Optical disc storage capacity:

  • 15 GB (single layer)
  • 30 GB (dual layer)
  • 51 GB (triple layer)

Blu-Ray Optical disc storage capacity:

  • 25 GB (single layer)
  • 50 GB (dual layer)

7825.jpegBlu-ray Disc includes support for multiple layers so that it’s later expandable to double or triple capacity. Also Blu-ray is backwards compatible with DVD; means all of the current Blu-ray players and future models will be able to read and upconvert current DVD formats. The only hurdle for now is the price which soon will be reduced comparatively to DVDs and DVD players. After that I don’t there will be any second thought regarding bringing buy blu ray players to our home. For PC users also there is good news. BD-ROM (read-only), BD-R (recordable) and BD-RE (rewritable) drives are already available in the market. So, those who want to experience the technology with your own eyes, grab your Blu-Player soon before something newer comes in the market to replace it.
