Welcome Back !!!

Google Apps is a service from Google for using custom domain names with several Google products. It features several web applications with similar functionality to traditional office suites, including: Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites. - Wiki

I had heard never signed into Google Apps before few days ago when a friend of mine whose domain - BizPersonnel.com I had hosted, asked me if I knew about this service Google was providing using which one can host his email accounts in Google rather than in their own hosting. Well, at that time I thought he was talking about forwarding the mails to his Gmail account but when he showed me his office email account hosted in Google with Gmail like interface, I thought it was something else and that’s when I thought I have a new topic to research and write about. Hosting your domain email on Google server was one of the services from Google Apps.

So, I signed up for a Free Trial Account of Google Apps which offered the same amount of storage as regular Gmail account which was enough for me (The premier cost 50 USD/yr and offered 25 GB of e-mail storage). I signed in as an IT administrator of the domain so that I can have the full access of the services it was providing. I had to verify if the domain really was mine which was no big deal at all. Then it says it will take about 48 hrs to verify (mine took much less though). After the verification, just log on to the domain thru Google App site, go to email and you’ll have access to your domain’s email in Gmail interface which is hosted in Google’s server not yours. Plus the advanced features of normal Gmail services, such as searching, spam filtering in additions to user interface that similar to normal Gmail view.

I heard Microsoft is also offering a similar service to the Gmail for your domain as part of its Windows Live initiative were Microsoft Windows Live Custom Domains offers to host a user’s domain and the email will be available via MSN Hotmail interface. I haven’t tried that though myself but if I try that I’ll do post on it too.
